Working notes

Before the first call, ask better questions.

A short conversation guide for finding a local collaborator, without turning it into a pitch contest.

Finding someone nearby is only the beginning. The useful question is whether you understand the work in the same way. Here is a starting point for a conversation with an agency, independent specialist or operations partner.

Name the problem before the deliverable.

“We need a new website” can hide several different problems. Are customers struggling to choose a product? Is the team spending too much time on manual tasks? Does product information change faster than the site can keep up? Explain the situation before prescribing the answer.

Ask who will do the work.

Find out who will be involved day to day, how questions are handled and what information they need from you. A clear working relationship matters as much as the first presentation.

Talk about constraints early.

Share the systems you need to keep, the people who can contribute and the times when your team is available. Ask which assumptions would change the proposed approach. A useful answer makes uncertainty visible rather than hiding it.

Agree on the next decision.

Before the conversation ends, write down what has been learned, what remains unknown and what the next step is. That may be a small discovery exercise, a reference conversation or a decision not to proceed.

This is an editorial discussion guide, not an assessment of any organization in our index. Start with a conversation, and evaluate the fit for your own work.
